Dermaplaning is a physical form of exfoliation which sloughs off dead skin cells on the surface and as an added bonus also removes most of the surface “peach fuzz”. Dermaplaning can be performed alone or in combination with other aesthetic services. It allows better penetration of chemical peels (if performed immediately following) and your at home products.

What type of equipment is used?

A small surgical blade is gently brushed along the surface of the face in fine small strokes.

What will the procedure feel like?

Dermaplaning is not painful. It is a relaxing treatment that feels like a credit card being slowly drawn across the skin.

Do I have to do anything to prepare in advance?

Ziana, Epiduo, Tretinoin, Clear Plus, Avene Retrinal or Triacneal, Triluma, etc.) and mechanical or granular exfoliation for 5 days prior to treatment. Avoid facial waxing for 7 days prior to treatment.

Follow the recommended skin care regimen as directed by your service provider for treatment. Make sure your skin is not irritated or inflamed before dermaplaning.

Please tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores as we recommend pretreatment to prevent a flare. Treatment may not be performed if there is an active cold sore.

What will I look like afterwards?

Your skin will feel smooth and usually looks bright and refreshed. Mild flushing and possible fine scratch marks may be visible post treatment and usually resolve within 1-2 days. You may experience some mild dryness and slight sensitivity for 1- 2 days after the treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

A series of treatments are recommended to start (4-6 treatments), spaced 2-4 weeks apart to achieve the best results and 4-6 weeks apart for maintenance. During your first treatment you will meet with your provider. At that time a treatment plan will be discussed.

When will I see results?

Results will vary per patient and realistic expectations will be discussed during your first treatment. Having a good at home regimen will help attain optimum results. In addition, smoking, excessive alcohol and excessive sun exposure will limit results.

Who cannot have treatment?

Dermaplaning is safe for all skin types and colors. Patients who have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) within the previous 6 months cannot have this treatment.
